ROSE
Charcoal on Charcoal Paper
28 x 43 cm
"Rose reveals the softer side of delicate objects in an ornate still life display, capturing a juxtaposition between that which contains life and that which fuels death."
Rose was one of many drawings I used to gain experience with charcoal. I was encouraged by my parents to draw still lifes, so for this drawing I chose objects of equal theme: delicacy.
The most challenging part of this drawing was recreating the diffraction of light present where the water mixes with the glass of the vase. Since the light diffracts at different angles, it was difficult to maintain a specific view of the vase to mimic the magnified effect it has on the rose's stem. Nothing, of course, was exact, and I took artistic liberties with the form of the cloth to get the idea across.
